Copper Mountain takes the KZN crown
Smart three-year old COPPER MOUNTAIN had to play minor roles to Malmoos and Got The Greenlight this season but he got his feature race win in the KZN Breeders Mile. Although not listed as a stakes race, the stake of R600 000 places the race into grade one prize money territory and the connections will be exceptionally happy to claim the bulk of it, especially considering the stable mate CHIJMES filled the second spot,
COPPER MOUNTAIN came into the race with a rating of 121, after an unlucky loss behind Got The Greenlight when giving up
his run to the winner at a crucial stage. This put him as short favourite in the main event today and his followers never had a moments doubt despite the early crawl in the race which was run more than seven seconds slower than the track record. He quickened smartly off the slow pace and the race was never in doubt.
COPPER MOUNTAIN was a bargain purchase by Vermaak Equine, where the colt was bought as a yearling for R80 000 from the BSA KZN Yearling Sale of 2019. The same auction where we selected CELESTIAL LOVE (R120 000) CRIMSON KING (R200 000) and LIGHT THAT LOOSE (R110 000)
